"I focus on individual relationships"

Tuesday, 24 October 2023

At the heart of every Keyton village, there is a dedicated village manager who always goes the extra mile to ensure the residents enjoy an independent and fulfilling lifestyle. Dan Murtagh, village manager of Viewbank Gardens, is one example who is committed to being engaged, approachable, and helpful to the residents.

In a conversation, he talked about the recent refurbishment of the community centre and his pivotal role in ensuring the wellbeing and inclusiveness of each of the residents living in the village.

Can you tell us about the newly renovated community centre?

I think this renovation was a long time coming, and it all started with feedback from the residents. They wanted a space that was not only more inviting but also more functional. Well, we've delivered just that.

The community centre is now bathed in natural light, making it an inviting hub for various activities and gatherings. It's the place to be for the residents, which is cozier and more welcoming. Sunday barbecues, knitting groups, book clubs, and happy hour gatherings - you name it. It aims to become the heart of our community, a place to socialise, pursue hobbies, and celebrate special occasions. It's everything the residents wished for.

How do you approach your role as a village manager in Viewbank Gardens?

I believe in being more hands-on and involved with the residents and their activities. As a Keyton staff member, I identify very closely with one of our values- respecting everyone's journey. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to this. People are on their unique journeys, and it's my job to meet them where they're comfortable. Some folks prefer a quieter, more low-key relationship, while others are up for a good chat.

My background in real estate has taught me the value of understanding people's individual situations and preferences. There are similarities between that role and being a village manager. It's like being a therapist. I aim to listen to the residents and connect with them individually. So, yes, I'm bringing a different perspective to the role – one that's focused on individual relationships and inclusivity.

What makes Viewbank Gardens unique?

I love the peace and quiet around here. And those gardens, well, they're not just lovely, they're stunning. It's like having your private view right outside your window. The greenery everywhere adds to that calming vibe, making this place a haven for folks looking for a bit of serenity, and residents appreciate it so much.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

I've found myself doing things that are way beyond the job description. Fixing TVs and sorting out phones is not exactly what I signed up for, but you know what? If it keeps the residents happy and content, nothing else matters. We do have our KPIs and everything to consider, but at the end of the day, if the residents are happy, that counts.

What does the future hold for you and Viewbank Gardens?

As we look ahead, some exciting plans are in the pipeline for Viewbank. We're all about keeping things fresh and modern. One big project on the horizon is giving the exterior of the village a makeover so it looks sleek and up-to-date. This includes painting roofs outside our units and window frames, all in a coordinated colour scheme. It's all part of our commitment to providing a top-notch living experience.

We're considering adding new amenities, like a coffee machine for the residents. We're dedicated to making this place even better for everyone. We want to keep things in line with modern living standards, and this project is a big part of that. So, expect to see a refreshed and rejuvenated village that's comfortable and visually appealing – a place you're proud to call home.
